The following article about zoisite was written by Stephanie Pflumm.
Truly a feast for your eyes and a comfort to your spirit, with insets of reddish pink Rubies that seem to burst out of the green surface. Zoisite has been drawing attention to itself with its unique combination of fiery Ruby and cooling comfort of the verdant Earth since the early 1800's.
Zoisite is a group of crystals within the Epidote family. Unakite (an Epidote dual crystal gemstone) is related to the Zoisite through this familial connection. There are three primary members (at the moment of this writing anyway) of the Zoisite family; Tanzanite (see 2003 archives), Thulite (a pink variety) and the Ruby encrusted green gem that carries the family name.
Calcium and Aluminum meet with Silicates during weathering or geological events that begin a metamorphic process. As these elements transform they usually create large masses of Zoisite, and on occasion crystals. Crystals are prismatic orthrombics, sometimes featuring striations (which can cause confusion with Tourmaline crystals).
A variety of minerals are known to add color to the Zoisite family. Thulite gets its pink hues from Manganese, Tanzanite's blue comes from Vanadium and Chromium causes the crystal to turn green. Crystals are also found in yellows, brown, purple and clear.
Mineral dealer Simon Presern first discovered Zoisites in the Saualpe mountains of Carthinia in 1805. Presern shared his unusual crystal with a Czech scientist named Baron Zois von Edelstein. The baron analyzed the gem and declared it a new, unidentified mineral. Originally the crystal was called Saualpite for the region it was discovered in, eventually though it came to be known as Zoisite.
Since their discovery in Carthinia, Zoisite crystals and gems have been found in Tanzania, Norway, Austria, India, Pakistan and the US. For the purpose of this article, I studied with the crystal family's namesake, Zoisite. This is the name usually attached to the green gem embedded with Ruby crystals, though sometimes it is known as Anyolite. It is this uniquely dual gem that first drew my attention to this group of minerals, and is also one of the most affordable members.
The Ruby crystals found in green Zoisite most likely formed before Calcium, Aluminum and Silicates metamorphisized into the new gemstone. They simply were caught up in the moment (geologically speaking), leaving behind a beautiful mineral duality to please our eyes and arouse our minds.
Zoisite's walk with humans is still young and little is written about working with this dynamic gem duo. Still, you will find it easy to become acquainted with your Zoisite crystal. It quickly allows you to establish a link between your mental and spiritual self. Helping to awaken and further strengthen your psychic abilities.
Do you work in a complex environment? Are some of the stresses on your job related to peers manipulating circumstances to gain power? Your Zoisite works to open your psychic senses in both creative and mundane circumstances. Keep one on your desk at work to assist you in weeding through relevant and petty challenges. It will teach you to be mentally aware of your colleague's true motivations. Assisting you in recognizing the most correct and productive course of action.
Ruby inspires confidence, motivates you to achieve goals and enhances stamina. Combining this fiery energy with Zoisite's calming greens keeps you focused and less frantic. Making it easier for you to choose wisely under stress or quickly when time is pressing you to act now. If you tend to be hyper-active, your gem will teach you ways you to channel your high energy into beneficial activities. You will learn how best to utilize this very special personal resource.
You may find Zoisites excellent at clearing spaces of harmful energies. Despite the reds and greens presented in the crystal, the energy it uses to clear spaces appears to be blue. Imagine the space you wish to clear, then visualize a blue field/light filling the area. Now, aim this blue field/light out the exit you most often use for this space. As this light leaves allow the Universe to receive the harmful energy, transmuting it into energies that serve the highest good of all.
Use your Zoisite to improve abundance by removing the ways you block its arrival. The Universe does not consider you unworthy. It considers you a bright and beautiful light, wishing you only joy, comfort and health. Often it is our own personal fears and doubts that prevent these gifts from coming to us. Your Zoisite gem brings you the mental awareness to see beyond wanting to simply allowing.
This crystal's duality seems to benefit both the Base and Crown Chakra. Providing for balance and health in your Base Chakra; opening and enlightening the Crown Chakra. Most health benefits from the Zoisite are still being learned. Melody's "Love Is In The Earth" recommends the gem for your heart, spleen, pancreas and lungs. Michael Gienger's "Crystal Power, Crystal Healing" says it helps with fertility, the reproductive organs, detoxifies and improves the immune system.
