Pietersite is a centering stone. It helps us to cope with painful emotions, keeps us focused, gives us insight, and empowers us to see our strengths. Pietersite is thought to encourage creativity, enhance mental clarity, increase perseverance, and promote calm and relaxation. It fosters tolerance, as it allows us to keep an open mind, and to accept people where they are. Pietersite is associated with the Zodiac signs of Leo and Sagittarius.
The following article about Malachite was written by Stephanie Pflumm.
Over the years I have received numerous requests for Pietersite, though I had never seen the gemstone myself. Until the first shipment arrived at Ozark Rock Exchange last month. What an exquisite surprise when I opened the new bag and all these beautiful stones started winking and flashing at me.
Pietersite belongs to a branch of the Tiger's Eye family called Riebeckite. Tiger's Eye is what geologists refer to as a psuedomorph, one mineral that changes into another.
Tiger's Eye began it's life as the mineral crocidolite, which is a form of absebtos. As Quartz replaced the crocidolite it took on the shape of the fiberous mineral and that is what causes the flash of light to play across the gemstones in this family.
The surface of a Pietersite looks rather chaotic, with streaks and colors going every direction. During the formation of the crystal, the materials that make it up were broken apart, swirled every which way, then were reformed and cemented together by Quartz. Stones and crystals that go through that process are refered to as brecciated.
Colors include blues, rusty reds, golds and browns. The blues in the stone are the most intriguing, ranging from a baby blue to a dark midnight hue.
This gemstone has a very young history amongst us. It was first discovered in Nambia by Sid Pieters around 1962. Almost by accident. Pieters was intrigued by several white cobble shaped stones he found in a farmyard, just outside Namibia in South Africa (approximately 2000 miles from the Tiger's Eye mines). They seemed to be heavy for their size and he took them to his workshop for further examination. When the stone was cut open, Pieters was astounded by the choatic flash of his new discovery. In 1964 he registered his new stone with Britian's mineral records and it was published as Pietersite. Pieter's efforts to mine the gemstone proved futile, because of thieves and other problems he quickly abandoned the project.
Almost 30 (1993) years later, in Nanyang, Henan China another form of Pietersite was discovered. Dubbed Eagle's Eye by the Chinese, this new Pietersite is slightly different from Mr. Pieter's mineral discovered in Africa, though both now carry the same name. The material found in China was formed from a different mineral, that is very similar to Crocidolite, called Torendrikite. Chinese Pietersite has a striking gold color to it and also has more reds than the African. The Pietersite specimens at Ozark Rock Exchange are from Namibia. I've not seen any specimens of the Chinese material.
Initially the Chinese did not think their Pietersite had any value. and didn't bother to share the stone with the rest of us until 1997. Mining the material has not any easier for the Chinese than it was for Pieters. Their mine is currently closed due to ground water flooding.
Despite its short history, Pietersite already has numerous energies and powers attributed to it. The strongest lesson I heard from this crystal is the power of choas to bring about important changes. Just as Pietersite began as choatic broken pieces swirling in a heated soup of minerals, and concluded in a completely changed but exotically beautiful gemstone. Our lives frequently unfold in the same manner.
These days I am often haunted by the feeling that our world is in an uncontrolled spin towards darkness and destruction. I take great comfort in the many wise words that I see and hear, saying that these times are necessary to bring in the new age of humans. Perhaps this is why Pietersite waited so long for us to find it. For if this current choas is the change that will bring in the light, we will need all the love we can find to cement back together the broken hearts, souls and lives left in the wake of these darker days.
In your everyday life, you will find Pietersite keeps you focused in spite of distractions and confusion swirling around you. The crystal will help you deal with difficult emotions. If necessary, it will assist you in distancing yourself from unpleasant situations without leaving your emotionally void. Allowing you to cope and resolve these events with a clear head and an open heart.
As a Third Eye tool, Pietersite will stimulate visions and pre-cognitive impressions during meditation. You may find your visions coming faster while using this crystal, but you will also understand them with greater clarity, in spite of how quickly you receive them. You will more easily recognize the spirituality of all things and understand the lessons and gifts every one of the Creator's children has to give. Including your own spirit and gifts.
Because of the insight Pietersite can inspire, many have referred to this gemstone as the "keys to heaven". It can definitely assist you in unlocking your own hidden perfection and teach you to exploit your courage and tireless efforts to create beauty in our world.
For healing, Pietersite may stimulate the pituitary gland and in turn promote the healthy function of the entire endocrine system. This ensures your body always produces the perfect amount of hormones you need for growth, metabolism, blood pressure, sexuality and even your body temperature. Though, it did not appear to have any inhibiting affect on my menopausal night sweats.
