ORE’S Featured Gemstone: MOONSTONE
by Stephanie Pflumm

Moonstone is a member of an extensive group of silicates called Feldspar. Labradorite, Sunstone & Amazonite are also members of the Feldspar family. Since each have distinctive energies for power & healing, this article will concentrate specifically on Moonstone Feldspars.

The majority of Feldspars are vey dull stones, used primarily for manufacturing glass, ceramics, & plumbing fixtures. As it weathers, Feldspar breaks down into kaolin, a clay mineral used in high quality ceramics & pottery.

Early Moonstone was mined from pegmatites. Pegmatites are the result of magmatic flows rich with hot waters & disolved minerals. Because of the high water content, the magma cools slowly, allowing for the formation of extremely large crystals.

Minerals that are included in Moonstone are sodium, calcium aluminium & silicon (quartz).

The opalescent luster of Moonstone occurs in a manner similar to the silky sheen of Tiger Eye. Microscopic crystal plates become embedded & are layered parallel to the surface of the stone under great pressures. The more plates that become embedded, the more brilliant the stone becomes.

Specimens from Ceylon are among the most prized in the world & the first choice for jewelry settings. It is also found sporadically in the Swiss Alps, Brazil near Rio, & Canada. In the United States Moonstone is mined in New York, Pennsylvania, New Mexico, North Carolina & Virginia. Specimens from Virginia have been compared to the quality of Ceylonese stones.

Colors in Moonstone can range from a translucent white to a pearly blue.

Historically the Moonstone’s power has been closely tied to Grandmother Moon. The Moonstone has also been associated with the Moon Goddesses Diana, Isis & Selene. Many believe that the strength of a Moonstone’s power is tied directly to the phases of the Moon. Some references recommended using the stone during Full Moons for dreaming, while others call for using a Moonstone for divination during the Waning Moon.

Regardless of how you time your use of this gemstone, it is an important tool for promoting your psychic abilities. If you work with Tarot Cards, Runes, Crystal Balls, Medicine Cards or any other type of divining tool, consider keeping a Moonstone with them to heighten your perceptions while working with them.

Moonstone is also used frequently in Love Magic. It can help reconcile lovers & open hearts. The gemstone can promote tenderness & bring happiness into its environment.

It provides protection for travelers especially by night or across water. Moonstone can assit you in absorbing those things that are “needed” in life while helping you discern what is merely “wanted”.

Use Moonstone to cleanse negativity from the Chakras & promote the femine aspects of your energies.

As a healing stone, Moonstone gives relief during menstruation & menopause. It helps to bring your hormonal cycle in balance with Nature’s own rhythms. Use it to enhance fertility or ease the discomfort of pregnancy & childbirth.

Moonstone will also aid in assimilating nutrients & eliminating toxins. It may be useful in allergic reactions to bee stings or insect bites. PLEASE note, if you are highly allergic to stings or bites, do NOT use Moonstone to replace prescriptions provided by your doctor.
