The cinnabar used in jewelry today is actually lacquered wood stained red and made to look like the mineral cinnabar. These beads are also sometimes black. The actual mineral cinnabar is no longer used in jewelry because it is a rich source for mercury, which is quite poisonous and should not be worn next to the skin.
