Chalk turquoise is a form of natural turquoise with lower metal content. It usually has a chalk-like consistency and a white to a pail blue color, and it must be stabilized to be used in jewelry. It is also usually dyed into more vivid colors to give it the blues and greens normally found in turquoise. Since it has lower metal content, it does not have the blue and green that copper and iron give turquoise.

The metal in this piece is made of a zinc rich pewter. Normally, pewter has greater than 90% tin, but much of the pewter sold today has higher zinc content.
